Manager Frank Lampard continued his busy shopping spree for his club over the past week, as Chelsea F.C. signed Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Kai Havertz to a five-year deal Friday evening. They acquired his services for 70 million euros.

The move comes one week to the day the Blues signed defender Thiago Silva from Paris Saint-Germain on a one-year deal.

The 21-year-old Havertz adds a revamped attack that has already been enhanced during the transfer window by the signings of Hakim Ziyech and German teammate Timo Werner. In 30 matches played with Bayer Leverkusen during the 2019-20 campaign, Havertz tallied 12 goals on 59 shot attempts. He additionally added six assists to the season.

Silva, meanwhile, adds more depth and experience to Chelsea’s defensive unit already backed up by the addition of Ben Chilwell from Leicester City. The 35-year-old will provide more depth to a backline that conceded 54 goals last season.

Both moves bring the Blues’ transfer signings up to six (Werner, Ziyech, Chilwell and Malang Sarr). With the 2020-21 season fast approaching, Lampard and the Blues will look to upgrade the goalkeeping position after Kepa Arrizabalaga underperformed last season. Regardless, an upgraded attack and defensive front should bring more variety and depth to an already youthful Blues’ squad.

Chelsea officially kicks off its season Monday, September 14 against Brighton & Hove Albion at Amex Stadium. The 2020-21 Premier League season officially begins Saturday, September 14.
